What type of machine did Leonardo da Vinci design to imitate a human knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a humanoid robot to imitate a human knight.

Leonardo’s robot was created around 1495, probably for a festival or court entertainment in Milan sponsored by Ludovico Sforza. His drawings show a suit of armor containing a system of pulleys, cables, and gears. The mechanism could reportedly sit, stand, move its arms, and move its head and jaw when operated by an internal system.

The machine is often called Leonardo’s robot or Leonardo’s mechanical knight. No complete original survives, so historians reconstruct its operation from notebook drawings and related studies of human anatomy and mechanics. In 2002, robotics engineer Mark Rosheim built a working reconstruction based on Leonardo’s plans.

This invention was not an autonomous robot in the modern electronic sense. It required mechanical power and control, and its likely purpose was entertainment or display. Nevertheless, it demonstrates Leonardo’s effort to translate human movement into linked mechanical actions.
