What type of machine did Leonardo da Vinci design to dredge mud from canals?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a canal dredger to remove mud and sediment from waterways.

The machine used a rotating or scooping mechanism to collect material from the bottom of a canal and raise it toward the bank. Leonardo studied such equipment in connection with water management, navigation, and the improvement of canals around Milan. Removing accumulated sediment was essential for keeping artificial waterways usable.

A dredger is different from a pump. A pump moves water or fluid, while a dredger removes solid deposits such as mud, sand, and silt. Leonardo’s canal studies included both kinds of machinery, which can make the designs easy to confuse.

The dredger shows Leonardo addressing an ordinary but difficult engineering problem. Canal systems required repeated maintenance, and mechanical excavation could reduce the labor needed to clear them. His notebooks therefore connect invention with infrastructure, not only with spectacular machines.
