What type of machine did Leonardo da Vinci design that is often called a mechanical knight?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a humanoid automaton, often called Leonardo’s mechanical knight. He prepared the design around 1495 for a court pageant in Milan, where a human-shaped machine may have been intended to move and perform simple actions.

The surviving drawings show an armored figure operated by a system of gears, cables, and pulleys. Reconstructions indicate that it could potentially sit, stand, raise its arms, and move its head or jaw. Its motions were limited, but the design represented a sophisticated use of mechanical linkages.

No original mechanical knight has survived, and historians cannot prove that Leonardo completed the machine. Modern reconstructions rely on the Codex Atlanticus and related sketches, while filling in missing engineering details.

The device is called an automaton because it was designed to move by itself through internal mechanisms. It was not a robot in the modern electronic sense: it had no computer, sensors, or electric motor.
