What type of machine did Leonardo da Vinci design as a self-operating armored figure?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci designed a robotic knight as a self-operating armored figure.

Leonardo’s drawings from around 1495 show a humanoid machine dressed in German-Italian armor. A system of pulleys, cables, gears, and levers inside the suit could reportedly move the arms and other parts when operated by a concealed mechanism.

The design was probably prepared for a theatrical or court spectacle rather than for practical labor. Its exact capabilities are uncertain because the surviving evidence is mainly notebook material, and Leonardo left no complete original machine.

In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working interpretation based on Leonardo’s sketches. That reconstruction helped demonstrate that the mechanism could produce limited human-like movements, but it should not be confused with a modern autonomous robot.
