Michael Faraday developed heavy flint glass to improve the quality of optical instruments.
Faraday spent years working on optical glass, partly in response to the needs of lighthouse engineers and manufacturers who required reliable, high-quality glass for lenses. The material was a lead-containing glass formulated for optical work, and Faraday’s experiments helped produce glass with useful transparency and refractive properties.
The glass later became especially important in Faraday’s investigations of the relationship between magnetism and light. In 1845, he passed polarized light through a piece of this heavy glass while applying a magnetic field. He observed that the plane of polarization rotated, a phenomenon now called the Faraday effect. This was among the first experimental demonstrations that magnetism could influence light.
“Heavy flint glass” is more specific than simply saying flint glass, which describes a broader family of lead-rich optical glasses. It is also not the same as crown glass, quartz glass, or borosilicate glass. Faraday’s optical-glass work was therefore both a materials-development project and a foundation for a landmark experiment in electromagnetism.
