What type of flight did Leonardo da Vinci’s aerial screw seek to achieve?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci’s aerial screw sought to achieve vertical flight.

Leonardo drew the aerial screw in a manuscript dating from about 1489. The design showed a large helical surface wrapped around a central mast. He reasoned that if the screw rotated quickly enough, its spiral surface might press against the air and lift the machine upward.

The sketch is frequently compared with a modern helicopter rotor, but the mechanisms are not the same. Leonardo’s concept lacked an engine, a practical rotor system, and a demonstrated method for producing enough power. The proposed frame was also too heavy for the materials and technology available in his time.

The aerial screw is therefore best understood as a theoretical flight machine. It is an influential example of Leonardo applying observations of screws, air, and mechanical motion to the problem of human flight.
