A Mass often precedes the reception in a Catholic quinceañera.
The service is commonly called a quinceañera Mass or misa de acción de gracias, meaning a Mass of thanksgiving. It gives the honoree and her family an opportunity to express gratitude, receive a blessing, and reaffirm religious commitments before the social celebration.
The Mass is especially associated with Catholic families in Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and Latino communities elsewhere. It may include readings, prayers, music, and a presentation of the honoree. The reception typically follows with food, speeches, photographs, and dancing.
Not every quinceañera includes a Mass. Some families hold a different religious service, a secular ceremony, or only a reception. The Mass is therefore a common Catholic component rather than a universal requirement of the cultural tradition. It is also not the same as a sacrament such as baptism, confirmation, or marriage.
