What type of event is a quinceañera most commonly classified as in cultural studies?

The story behind the answer

A quinceañera is most commonly classified as a coming-of-age celebration.

The event marks a girl’s transition from childhood toward young womanhood at age fifteen. Families often use the occasion to recognize personal growth, family support, and new responsibilities. A formal dress, public presentation, symbolic gifts, and speeches can all reinforce that transitional meaning.

Calling it a coming-of-age celebration does not mean that the honoree becomes legally adult at fifteen. Legal adulthood, voting rights, marriage rules, and other responsibilities depend on the laws of the country or state. The cultural milestone and the legal milestone are separate.

Quinceañeras are especially associated with Latin American and Latino communities, but practices differ significantly by region and family. Some include a Catholic Mass, while others are secular. Some are large formal receptions; others are smaller gatherings. The shared concept is the public recognition of a fifteenth-birthday transition.
