A waltz is the traditional formal dance performed by a quinceañera and members of her court.
The dance is often called the vals, the Spanish word for waltz. It may be performed during the formal presentation, with the honoree and attendants following a rehearsed sequence. Families sometimes arrange professional choreography or lessons, especially when the dance includes multiple formations and costume changes.
The waltz tradition helps give the celebration a ceremonial character. It is usually slower and more formal than the later party dances, which can include regional music, popular songs, salsa, cumbia, merengue, or other styles chosen by the family and community.
A common mistake is assuming every quinceañera follows an identical dance program. Some celebrations include only a traditional waltz, while others replace it with contemporary choreography or omit a formal court altogether. The waltz is a longstanding convention, not a universal requirement.
