A waltz is traditionally performed as the main choreographed dance at a quinceañera.
The dance is often called the vals, the Spanish word for waltz. The celebrant may begin with a formal dance involving her father or another honored relative, followed by a choreographed performance with the court of honor.
The waltz tradition reflects European ballroom influence in Latin American society. Over time, quinceañera choreography has expanded to include popular music, hip-hop, salsa, cumbia, and other styles, especially in contemporary celebrations.
The presence of a waltz does not mean every quinceañera follows an identical program. Some families retain a formal vals, while others replace it with a modern dance medley. “Waltz” identifies the traditional form, not every dance performed at the party.
