A waltz is commonly performed as the centerpiece of a quinceañera reception.
The formal dance, often called the vals, traditionally features the quinceañera with her court of attendants. It may begin with a carefully rehearsed waltz and later shift into contemporary music or a more energetic choreographed routine.
The vals reflects the celebration’s formal character and is one reason quinceañera receptions can resemble other major family ceremonies. In some families, the birthday celebrant dances first with her father or another important relative before joining the court.
There is no single mandatory choreography. Music and dance styles vary according to country, generation, family preference, and the celebrant’s personality. Thus, waltz is the conventional answer for the formal centerpiece, even though many modern celebrations include hip-hop, pop, salsa, or other dances afterward.
