What type of ceremony often accompanies a quinceañera in Catholic families?

The story behind the answer

In Catholic families, a quinceañera is often accompanied by a Catholic Mass.

This religious service is commonly called a Misa de Acción de Gracias, or Thanksgiving Mass, in Spanish. It gives the celebrant and family an opportunity to express gratitude and receive a blessing as part of the fifteenth-birthday observance.

The Mass is not universal. Quinceañeras are also celebrated by families from other Christian denominations, other faiths, and secular backgrounds. Even within Catholic communities, the service may be arranged differently depending on local parish practice and family preference.

A quinceañera Mass should not be confused with baptism or confirmation. Those are separate Catholic sacraments. The quinceañera is generally a cultural and religious rite of passage rather than a sacrament of the Catholic Church.
