What type of ceremony may begin a traditional Catholic quinceañera?

The story behind the answer

A traditional Catholic quinceañera may begin with a Catholic Mass.

This service is often called a Misa de acción de gracias, or Thanksgiving Mass. During it, the celebrant may give thanks for her life and family and receive a blessing. Practices differ considerably: some families attend a regular parish Mass, while others arrange a special service.

The religious portion is followed, in many celebrations, by a reception featuring food, music, formal clothing, speeches, and dancing. A Catholic Mass is not required for every quinceañera. Families may choose a secular ceremony, another religious service, or no formal service at all.

The event is also distinct from a wedding. Although both can involve formal attire, processions, attendants, and a large reception, a quinceañera is a birthday and coming-of-age celebration rather than a marriage rite.
