What type of celebration is a quinceañera generally classified as?

The story behind the answer

A quinceañera is generally classified as a coming-of-age celebration.

It marks a young person’s transition from childhood toward a new social stage, traditionally at age 15. The event may include formal clothing, music, dancing, speeches, family customs, and a large reception. These elements make it more than an ordinary birthday party.

The celebration has both cultural and, for some families, religious dimensions. A church service may accompany the party, but the religious service is not what defines every quinceañera. Many families organize secular celebrations, and practices differ across Latin America and the diaspora.

“Coming-of-age” is also the safest broad description because there is no single official ceremony required everywhere. The scale and symbolism can range from a small family gathering to a large, highly choreographed event.
