What type of Catholic service often precedes a traditional quinceañera reception?

The story behind the answer

A Thanksgiving Mass often precedes a traditional quinceañera reception.

In Catholic families, the religious portion is commonly called a Misa de Acción de Gracias, meaning “Thanksgiving Mass.” It gives the celebrant and her family an opportunity to express gratitude and receive a blessing as she reaches 15.

The Mass is not identical to a wedding ceremony. A quinceañera does not create a marriage, and the celebrant does not exchange wedding vows. The service may include prayers, readings, a homily, and special blessings, depending on the parish and local custom.

Not every quinceañera includes a church service. Some celebrations are secular, while others use a ceremony outside a Catholic church. The reception may still feature traditional elements such as a court of honor, a formal entrance, a first dance, and symbolic gifts. “Thanksgiving” describes the service’s purpose, not necessarily a connection to the United States holiday.
