What type of cart did Leonardo da Vinci design that could move without being pushed by a person or animal?
Answer
Self-propelled cart
Answer
Self-propelled cart
Leonardo da Vinci designed a self-propelled cart that could move without being pushed by a person or animal.
The machine, drawn in Leonardo’s notebooks around 1478 to 1480, used coiled springs inside its body to store energy. As the springs unwound, gears transferred motion to the cart’s wheels. Steering could be set in advance, allowing the vehicle to follow a programmed path.
The cart was probably intended for theatrical performances or court spectacles rather than ordinary transportation. Its concealed mechanism could make it appear to move by itself, a striking effect in a Renaissance celebration.
Modern reconstructions have shown that the design is mechanically plausible, although the precise original dimensions and operating details remain uncertain. It is therefore better understood as an early programmable automaton than as a practical automobile.
