James Wilson is diagnosed with thymoma during the final season of House M.D.
Thymoma is a tumor originating in the thymus, an organ in the upper chest involved in the development of T lymphocytes. In the series, Wilson learns that his cancer is terminal and has only a limited amount of time left to live. The diagnosis drives the final season’s most important storyline.
Wilson’s illness changes the relationship between him and Gregory House. House responds to the prognosis with denial, anger, and increasingly reckless attempts to spend time with Wilson. Their friendship becomes the emotional focus of the concluding episodes and leads directly into the series finale, “Everybody Dies.”
The diagnosis is sometimes remembered as a generic form of cancer because the story emphasizes its terminal prognosis rather than detailed oncology. It is specifically thymoma, not lymphoma or a brain tumor. The disease also fits the show’s preference for unusual medical conditions while serving a clear narrative purpose in Wilson’s character arc.
