What type of armor did Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight wear?
Answer
Plate armor
Answer
Plate armor
Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical knight wore plate armor.
Leonardo designed the mechanical knight around 1495, probably for a spectacular court entertainment in Milan. The machine was built inside a suit of Italian-style plate armor and used a system of pulleys, cables, and gears. A seated operator or internal mechanism could move parts of the figure, including the arms and jaw, depending on the reconstruction.
The knight is often called Leonardo’s robot, although the modern word robot did not exist in the fifteenth century. It was an automaton: a machine designed to perform movements without behaving like an intelligent modern robot.
The original device disappeared, but Leonardo’s notebooks preserved enough drawings for modern researchers to construct working models. The armor was therefore not merely decorative; it also concealed and framed the mechanical structure. It should not be confused with Leonardo’s separate military vehicle and weapons designs.
