What two images appear together on the reverse of the United States Bicentennial dollar?

The story behind the answer

The reverse of the United States Bicentennial dollar shows the Liberty Bell superimposed against the Moon.

The design was created by Dennis R. Williams, who was only 21 when he won the competition. He had originally developed the concept as a class assignment before it was selected for the commemorative coin.

The Liberty Bell connected the dollar to American independence and Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The Moon reflected the technological achievements of the United States during the space age and gave the design a distinctly modern element.

The quarter used a colonial drummer, and the half dollar showed Independence Hall. All three circulating Bicentennial coins retained their usual obverse portraits but carried the double date 1776–1976.
