What two colors make up Ukraine's national flag?

Ukraine’s national flag is made of two colors: blue and yellow.

The design is a horizontal bicolour with an equally sized blue band above a yellow band. Ukraine’s Constitution describes the state flag in those terms, and the modern design was officially restored by parliament on January 28, 1992, after independence from the Soviet Union.

The colors have older roots. A blue-and-yellow banner appeared in Lviv during the 1848 Spring of Nations, and similar colors were associated with Ukrainian lands, heraldry, and Cossack traditions. The flag’s proportions are normally 2:3.

A common mix-up concerns the order and shades: historical Ukrainian flags sometimes used lighter blue or placed yellow above blue. The current national design places blue on top and yellow below. The shades were formally standardized in the 2000s, although variations remain visible in manufactured flags.
