What treaty officially ended the American Revolutionary War, a major milestone leading to America250?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris (1783) officially ended the American Revolutionary War, a major milestone leading to America250.

Representatives of the United States and Great Britain signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Britain recognized the Thirteen Colonies as free, sovereign, and independent states, formally acknowledging the new country’s independence.

The American negotiators included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens. The treaty also established broad boundaries for the United States, extending west to the Mississippi River and north toward British North America.

The treaty is often confused with the 1783 peace agreements signed between Britain and other European powers. Those related agreements are collectively called the Peace of Paris, but the American-British agreement itself is specifically the Treaty of Paris (1783). Congress ratified it in Annapolis on January 14, 1784.
