What train toured the United States during 1975–1976 to celebrate the nation's Bicentennial?

The story behind the answer

The American Freedom Train toured the United States during 1975–1976 to celebrate the nation's Bicentennial.

The traveling exhibition consisted of 26 cars carrying American historical objects and cultural artifacts. Three steam locomotives powered it at different stages: Reading Company No. 2101, Southern Pacific No. 4449, and Texas & Pacific No. 610.

The tour began in Wilmington, Delaware, on April 1, 1975, and continued through December 1976. It visited all 48 contiguous states, stopped in 138 cities, and attracted more than 7 million visitors. The train covered more than 25,000 miles during its 21-month journey.

It is distinct from the earlier Freedom Train that toured from 1947 to 1949. The 1975–1976 train was specifically associated with the Bicentennial, the 200th anniversary of American independence. Its nationwide route gave visitors a mobile museum during the celebrations.
