What town on Long Lake is destroyed by Smaug?

The story behind the answer

The town on Long Lake destroyed by Smaug is Lake-town. In Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Lake-town is a settlement of Men built on wooden platforms and stilts over the Long Lake, south of the Lonely Mountain and near the Forest River.

Bilbo and Thorin’s company reach the town after escaping the Elves of Mirkwood in empty barrels. The townspeople receive them because Thorin claims royal descent and hopes to reclaim Erebor, though the town’s elected Master is more interested in practical and political advantage than heroic prophecy.

After Bilbo enters Smaug’s lair, the dragon realizes that intruders have returned to the Lonely Mountain. Believing Lake-town helped the suspected thieves, Smaug flies south and attacks it. The town’s weapons cannot pierce his armoured hide, but Bard learns of a bare patch beneath the dragon’s left breast and kills him with the Black Arrow. Smaug’s falling body destroys much of Lake-town. Survivors later rebuild it near the original site. Lake-town is also called Esgaroth, a name often used interchangeably with it.
