What town is the Hôtel Tatin in?
Answer
Lamotte-Beuvron
Answer
Lamotte-Beuvron
The Hôtel Tatin is in Lamotte-Beuvron, France.
Lamotte-Beuvron is a town in the Loir-et-Cher department of central France, in the Sologne region. The Hôtel Tatin was operated by sisters Stéphanie and Caroline Tatin and became associated with the caramelized upside-down apple tart that now bears their name.
The hotel stood near the town’s railway station and served travelers as well as visitors to the region. Its location helped connect the sisters’ cooking with a wider audience, although the dessert was not necessarily called tarte Tatin by the sisters themselves. The name and reputation developed later through culinary writers and Parisian promotion.
A popular legend says the tart was created by accident at the hotel, but historians have pointed out that related upside-down fruit tarts already existed. Lamotte-Beuvron nevertheless remains the canonical town linked with the dish and its historic hotel. The former Hôtel Tatin has since been renovated and operates under the name Maison Tatin.
