What tour directly supported Metallica’s 1991 album, The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

The Wherever We May Roam Tour directly supported Metallica’s 1991 album, The Black Album.

Metallica promoted the album through a series of tours, but the Wherever We May Roam Tour was the first tour directly intended to support the record. Its name came from the Black Album song “Wherever I May Roam,” which was also released as one of the album’s singles.

The touring campaign placed the new material alongside established Metallica songs. The band also performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, where its set included “Enter Sandman,” “Sad but True,” and “Nothing Else Matters.” James Hetfield additionally performed Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy” with members of Queen and Tony Iommi.

The album’s broader touring cycle later included major events such as Woodstock ’94. The Shit Hits the Sheds Tour is therefore related to the album’s promotion, but it was not the first tour directly designed around the 1991 release.
