What total score did Jordan Spieth post at the 2017 Open at Royal Birkdale?

The story behind the answer

Jordan Spieth posted a total score of 268 at the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. His four rounds were 65, 69, 65 and 69, producing a 12-under-par total on the par-70 course.

Spieth led after the second and third rounds, but the final day became unexpectedly dramatic. He surrendered his advantage with early bogeys, then took a penalty drop after driving far right on the 13th hole. From a practice-area location, he played an extraordinary recovery shot and limited the damage to a bogey.

That escape sparked one of the tournament’s most memorable finishes. Spieth birdied the 14th, eagled the par-five 15th and birdied the 16th and 17th before parring the last. He finished three strokes ahead of Matt Kuchar, who recorded 271.

The 2017 victory was Spieth’s third major championship, completing his Open-Masters-U.S. Open major sequence before his 24th birthday. It also made him the first American to win the Open at Royal Birkdale since Mark O’Meara in 1998.
