What title is given to the final conflict in The Hobbit?
Answer
Battle of Five Armies
Answer
Battle of Five Armies
The final conflict in The Hobbit is called the Battle of Five Armies.
The battle begins after Smaug’s death, when Dwarves, Men, and Wood-elves gather around the Lonely Mountain. They initially confront one another over the treasure of Erebor and compensation for Lake-town. Before that dispute becomes a full war, Gandalf warns them that a large force of Goblins and Wargs is approaching.
The opposing peoples then unite against the common enemy. The five forces traditionally counted in the battle are the Dwarves, Elves, Men, Goblins, and Wargs. Eagles and Beorn also arrive and affect the outcome, but they are usually treated as later reinforcements rather than part of the basic five-way naming convention.
The battle is the novel’s military climax, though Bilbo spends much of it unconscious after being struck by a stone. Thorin Oakenshield is fatally wounded, reconciles with Bilbo before dying, and is succeeded by Dáin Ironfoot. The event should not be confused with the Battle of Pelennor Fields or the Battle of Helm’s Deep, both of which occur in The Lord of the Rings.
