What title is given to the Buddha’s first discourse in the Buddhist tradition?

The story behind the answer

The title given to the Buddha’s first discourse is the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta.

The Pali title is commonly translated as “Setting the Dhamma Wheel in Motion.” Buddhist tradition says the Buddha delivered this discourse to five former companions at the Deer Park in Sarnath. It presents the Middle Way, the Four Noble Truths, and the Noble Eightfold Path.

The discourse is especially important because it marks the beginning of the Buddha’s public teaching career in traditional accounts. It should not be confused with the Anattalakkhana Sutta, another early discourse traditionally delivered to the same group. The title appears in Pali as Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta and in Sanskrit-related forms as Dharmacakrapravartana Sutra.
