What title does Bard take after rebuilding Dale?

The story behind the answer

After rebuilding Dale, Bard takes the title King of Dale.

Bard begins The Hobbit as a skilled archer and captain in Lake-town, also called Esgaroth. He is descended from Girion, the last Lord of Dale, the city destroyed by Smaug before the events of the novel. Bard’s royal connection helps explain why he becomes the natural leader of the people displaced by the dragon’s attack.

During Smaug’s assault on Lake-town, Bard learns the location of the dragon’s vulnerable spot from a thrush. He fires the Black Arrow and kills Smaug, although the dragon’s falling body devastates the town. After the Battle of the Five Armies, Bard uses a share of the recovered treasure to help restore Dale.

The rebuilt city prospers under his rule, and Bard becomes its king. This title is distinct from “King under the Mountain,” which belongs to the Dwarven ruler of Erebor; after Thorin’s death, that title passes to Dáin Ironfoot. Bard’s son Bain later succeeds him, followed by his grandson Brand.
