What title did Salvador Dalí receive from Spain’s King Juan Carlos I in 1982?

King Juan Carlos I made Salvador Dalí Marqués de Dalí de Púbol in 1982.

The Spanish king granted Dalí the hereditary title Marqués de Dalí de Púbol, recognizing the artist’s international importance. The title referred to Púbol, the village in Catalonia where Dalí had restored a medieval castle for Gala.

Gala received the castle as a gift, and Dalí decorated its rooms and grounds with paintings, furniture and theatrical details. After her death in 1982, Dalí lived for periods at the castle, although his health was declining.

The title is sometimes rendered in English as Marquis of Dalí of Púbol. It should not be confused with the name of the castle itself, Gala-Dalí Castle, or with Dalí’s museum in Figueres.
