Answer
Love Is in the Bin
Banksy gave the artwork that partly shredded itself after selling at auction in 2018 the title Love Is in the Bin.
The work began as Girl with Balloon, a 2006 image showing a child reaching toward a red heart-shaped balloon. In October 2018, a framed version was sold at Sotheby’s in London. Immediately after the hammer fell, a shredder concealed inside the frame began cutting the image into strips.
Only the lower part of the picture passed through the shredder, leaving the work partly intact. Banksy later presented the transformed piece as a new artwork, Love Is in the Bin. Sotheby’s said the incident was unexpected, although the mechanism had clearly been built into the frame.
The episode became one of the most famous acts of performance and destruction in modern auction history. In 2021, the altered work sold again at Sotheby’s for £18.6 million, far above its earlier price.
