The The Who album containing “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” is Who’s Next. Released in 1971, it became one of the band’s most acclaimed albums and a landmark of British rock.
The record grew out of Lifehouse, an ambitious multimedia project Pete Townshend had planned as a follow-up to Tommy. When that project proved difficult to complete, producer Glyn Johns helped shape the strongest recordings into a more focused album. Several songs retain ideas developed for Lifehouse, including the two famous synthesizer-driven tracks.
“Baba O’Riley” opens the album with a repeating synthesizer pattern, violin and Roger Daltrey’s vocal, while “Won’t Get Fooled Again” closes it with another extended keyboard sequence and its famous shouted climax. The album is often confused with Quadrophenia or Tommy, which are also major The Who albums, but neither contains both songs. “Baba O’Riley” is also frequently called “Teenage Wasteland,” although that phrase is not the song’s official title.
