What technology-related investment bubble burst in the early 2000s, causing the dot-com crash?

The story behind the answer

The technology-related investment bubble that burst in the early 2000s was the dot-com bubble.

From the mid-1990s, investors poured money into internet companies, including many businesses with little revenue or no profits. The Nasdaq Composite rose rapidly as the commercial internet expanded and venture capital funded ambitious online projects. The bubble reached its peak on 10 March 2000, when the Nasdaq closed at 5,048.62.

Prices then fell sharply, and the Nasdaq eventually lost roughly 78% of its value from its peak to its October 2002 low. The collapse did not mean that internet technology lacked value; companies such as Amazon and Google later grew substantially. The crash instead showed the danger of treating projected growth as guaranteed earnings.
