What team purchased Ichiro Suzuki from the Orix baseball team in Japan?

The story behind the answer

The Seattle Mariners purchased the rights to negotiate with Ichiro Suzuki from Japan’s Orix BlueWave.

The transaction took place after the 2000 season, when Seattle won a posting bid for Suzuki. The Mariners paid Orix $13.125 million for exclusive negotiating rights and then signed Suzuki to a contract. Technically, Seattle did not simply buy the player outright; it acquired the right to negotiate with him under Japan’s posting system.

Suzuki had already become a major star in Japan. He played nine seasons for Orix in the Pacific League, won seven consecutive batting titles from 1994 through 2000, and established himself as one of the country’s most accomplished hitters.

His move to Seattle was historic because he became the first Japanese position player to play in Major League Baseball. In 2001, he won both American League Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player, while also earning a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger. The Orix BlueWave later merged with another club and became the Orix Buffaloes.
