What team hired Pat Shurmur as its head coach? The New York Giants. The Giants hired Shurmur in January 2018, making him the franchise's head coach after Ben McAdoo was dismissed during the 2017 season. Shurmur had previously served as offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings.

Shurmur arrived in New York with a reputation for quarterback development and offensive design. In Minnesota, he helped guide an offense that adapted successfully after quarterback injuries, with Case Keenum leading the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game during the 2017 season. The Giants hoped that experience would help revive their struggling team and support quarterback Eli Manning.

His first Giants season began with a 1–7 record, but New York finished 5–11. The team selected running back Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and Barkley won Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Shurmur coached the Giants for two seasons. New York went 5–11 again in 2019, and the Giants dismissed him after the season. He later returned to the Vikings as offensive coordinator and subsequently held other NFL coaching roles.
