What team hired Matt Patricia as their head coach?

The story behind the answer

The Detroit Lions hired Matt Patricia as their head coach in 2018.

Detroit announced the hire on February 5, 2018, after Patricia had spent six seasons as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator. He succeeded Jim Caldwell, whom the Lions dismissed after the 2017 season despite a 9–7 record.

Patricia arrived with a strong reputation from New England, where he helped coach defenses that won Super Bowl titles in the 2014 and 2016 seasons. His first victory as Detroit’s head coach came against his former team: the Lions defeated the Patriots 26–10 in September 2018.

The tenure did not produce a turnaround. Detroit went 6–10 in 2018 and 3–12–1 in 2019. Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn were fired on November 28, 2020, after the Lions opened that season 4–7. Patricia’s Detroit record was 13–29–1, but the original hiring answer remains the Lions.
