What team hired Jon Gruden as their head coach in 2018?

The Oakland Raiders hired Jon Gruden as their head coach in 2018. The Raiders announced the hire on January 6, and Gruden was formally introduced several days later.

The appointment marked Gruden’s return to the franchise where he began his NFL head-coaching career. He had previously coached the Raiders from 1998 through 2001, leading them to three consecutive playoff appearances and an AFC championship during the 2000 season. Oakland traded him to Tampa Bay in 2002, where he defeated the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Gruden’s return was one of the most publicized coaching hires in NFL history. Raiders owner Mark Davis gave him a reported 10-year, $100 million contract, unusually large for an NFL coach at the time. The team later moved to Las Vegas in 2020, but Gruden’s 2018 hiring was made while the franchise was still known as the Oakland Raiders.
