What team did Mitch Richmond play for from 1991–1998?

Mitch Richmond played for the Sacramento Kings from 1991 through 1998. The shooting guard arrived during the 1991–92 season in a trade from the Golden State Warriors and quickly became the franchise’s defining star of the decade.

Sacramento acquired Richmond on November 1, 1991, sending the Warriors the rights to rookie Billy Owens. Richmond had already won NBA Rookie of the Year with Golden State in 1989 and had been part of the Warriors’ high-scoring “Run TMC” trio with Tim Hardaway and Chris Mullin.

During his seven seasons in Sacramento, Richmond led the Kings in scoring every year and averaged at least 21.9 points per game in each season. He was selected as an All-Star from 1993 through 1998 and won the 1995 All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award.

A frequent mix-up is confusing Richmond’s Sacramento years with his later Washington Wizards tenure. Sacramento traded him, along with Otis Thorpe, to Washington in May 1998 for Chris Webber. That trade helped launch the Kings’ more successful early-2000s era, even though Richmond was no longer on the roster.
