A doll is traditionally presented to a quinceañera as a reminder of childhood.
This custom is often known as the “last doll” ceremony, or la última muñeca. The doll represents the childhood the honoree is symbolically leaving behind as she enters a new stage of life. A parent or another important family member may present it during the reception.
The ritual is one of several symbolic acts associated with quinceañeras. Other celebrations may include presentations involving jewelry, a Bible, a rosary, flowers, or shoes. These elements are not required everywhere, and their meanings can change according to family, religion, and local custom.
The doll presentation should not be confused with the celebrant receiving an ordinary birthday toy. Its importance comes from the transition it represents. Many contemporary families retain the symbolism while adapting the object, wording, or ceremony to fit a modern celebration.
