What symbol is hidden between the E and x in the FedEx logo?

The story behind the answer

An arrow is hidden between the E and x in the FedEx logo.

The negative-space arrow appears in the white area formed by the capital E and the lowercase x in the company’s wordmark. It points to the right, suggesting movement, direction, speed, and delivery—ideas closely associated with FedEx’s express-shipping business.

The logo was created by the design firm Landor Associates and introduced in 1994, when Federal Express adopted the shorter FedEx name for its public identity. The wordmark uses contrasting colors for the “Fed” and “Ex” portions, while different FedEx business units use different colors for “Ex.”

The arrow is easy to miss because it is not drawn as a separate object. It is created entirely by the surrounding letter shapes, a technique called negative-space design. It is therefore different from the visible arrows in logos such as Amazon’s, whose curved arrow is directly drawn beneath the wordmark.
