What surface is used at Wimbledon?
Answer
Grass
Answer
Grass
Wimbledon uses grass courts. It is the only one of tennis’s four Grand Slam tournaments still played on grass, preserving the surface associated with the sport’s early “lawn tennis” traditions.
The Championships began in 1877 at the All England Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London. The tournament moved to its current Church Road site in 1922, but its grass-court identity remained unchanged. Since 2001, Wimbledon’s courts have been sown with 100% perennial ryegrass, selected for durability under modern professional play.
Grass generally produces a faster, lower-bouncing game than clay, rewarding quick reactions, precise serving and attacking play. A common mix-up is assuming Wimbledon uses the same hard surface as the Australian or US Open, or clay used at the French Open. Those tournaments changed surfaces over time; Wimbledon remains the traditional grass major.
