What subtitle did the first Pokémon animated film use in English?

The first Pokémon animated film used the English subtitle “Mewtwo Strikes Back.”

The film is commonly known as Pokémon: The First Movie—Mewtwo Strikes Back. It was first released theatrically in Japan on July 18, 1998, and centers on Mewtwo, a genetically engineered Pokémon who questions his identity and turns against the humans connected to his creation.

The story brings Ash, Misty, and Brock to New Island after they receive an invitation to challenge a powerful Pokémon Trainer. The film also features cloned Pokémon and a confrontation between Mewtwo and Mew. Its themes include scientific experimentation, identity, friendship, and the consequences of treating living creatures as tools.

Some references call the movie simply Pokémon: The First Movie, while others emphasize the subtitle. The 2019 computer-animated remake is titled Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, so “Evolution” is not the subtitle of the original 1998 film.
