What subtitle appears in the title of Pokémon: The First Movie?

The subtitle in Pokémon: The First Movie is “Mewtwo Strikes Back.”

The film’s full English title is Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back. It was released in Japan in 1998 and internationally from 1998 to 1999, becoming the first theatrical Pokémon film. The story centers on Mewtwo, a genetically engineered Pokémon created from research involving Mew.

Mewtwo challenges the ideas of identity, creation, and whether artificially created Pokémon can surpass their origins. Ash, Pikachu, and their friends are invited to a mysterious island, where they face Mewtwo and powerful cloned Pokémon.

The subtitle should not be confused with later Pokémon films. The Power of One was the subtitle of the second movie, while Spell of the Unown belonged to the third. The film’s 2019 computer-animated remake used the title Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution.
