What subject is the only class Holden has not failed at Pencey?

The story behind the answer

What subject is the only class Holden has not failed at Pencey? English is the only class Holden has not failed at Pencey.

At the beginning of The Catcher in the Rye, Holden explains that he has failed four of his five subjects at Pencey Preparatory School. English is the exception, partly because he can write well and partly because he has little trouble producing the occasional composition required in the course.

His success in English is an important irony. Holden is a gifted storyteller and an observant critic of other people’s behavior, yet he resists the institutions and assignments that might measure those abilities. His narration is fluent, vivid, and highly individual even while he describes himself as a poor student.

Readers sometimes confuse this detail with Holden’s later conversation with Mr. Spencer, his history teacher. History is one of the subjects he has failed, and Mr. Spencer’s lecture about responsibility helps frame Holden’s departure from Pencey. Holden’s academic record is therefore part of the novel’s opening crisis, not merely background information.
