What subject appears on the first 2026 quarter released for the United States semiquincentennial?

The story behind the answer

The Mayflower Compact appears on the first 2026 quarter released for the United States semiquincentennial.

The Mayflower Compact quarter entered circulation on January 5, 2026, as part of a five-quarter series honoring major themes in American history. Its design depicts two Pilgrims and the Mayflower. The subject represents the 1620 agreement made by the English settlers aboard the ship before they established Plymouth Colony.

The other planned quarter subjects are the American Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, and the Gettysburg Address. Because several of these subjects are directly tied to the founding era, the Mayflower Compact quarter can be mistaken for the Declaration of Independence quarter, but they are separate designs.

The 2026 coin program was authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. It allowed the Mint to redesign circulating coins for the semiquincentennial year while preserving familiar denominations such as the quarter.
