What stroke is Michael Phelps best known for?
Answer
Butterfly
Answer
Butterfly
Michael Phelps is best known for the butterfly stroke, especially because many of his signature Olympic victories came in butterfly events. His most famous races included the 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter butterfly, although he also became highly successful in individual medley and freestyle events.
Phelps’s butterfly technique combined an unusually powerful dolphin kick, a long stroke, and exceptional underwater speed. He began serious swimming training at age seven and was coached by Bob Bowman from age eleven. Bowman helped develop the disciplined training system that made Phelps effective across several strokes rather than limiting him to a single specialty.
Butterfly was also central to Phelps’s Olympic legacy. He won the 200-meter butterfly at four consecutive Olympics from 2004 through 2016 and won the 100-meter butterfly at three consecutive Games. His 2008 victory over Milorad Čavić in the 100-meter butterfly was decided by one hundredth of a second. Although butterfly is the canonical answer, Phelps’s full competitive repertoire also included backstroke, breaststroke within medley races, freestyle, and individual medley.
