What stock ticker symbol does Amazon use on Nasdaq?

The story behind the answer

Amazon’s stock ticker symbol on Nasdaq is AMZN.

A stock ticker is the short exchange code used to identify a publicly traded security. Amazon.com, Inc.’s common stock trades on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the four-letter symbol AMZN. The letters are derived from the company’s name, rather than from Amazon Web Services or one of its consumer brands.

Amazon began as an online bookseller founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 and went public in 1997. Since then, the company has expanded into e-commerce, cloud computing through AWS, digital advertising, streaming, devices and other businesses. Its Nasdaq listing does not mean that every technology company uses Nasdaq, nor does AMZN represent a separate AWS stock: Amazon is the publicly traded company.

The wrong options are ticker symbols associated with other major companies: MSFT identifies Microsoft, GOOG is one Alphabet share class, and AAPL identifies Apple. Investors may also encounter GOOGL, Alphabet’s other listed share class, but neither Alphabet symbol belongs to Amazon.
