What stayed inside Pandora’s jar after the troubles escaped?

The story behind the answer

In the familiar version of the myth, hope stayed inside Pandora’s jar after the troubles escaped. Hesiod’s account says that only Hope remained within the vessel when Pandora closed it again.

The detail has generated centuries of interpretation. Some readers see Hope as a comfort preserved for humanity, while others note that Hesiod’s wording can support a darker question: if Hope was kept inside, humans might have been left without it. The myth itself does not provide a single explicit philosophical explanation.

The surviving object is often called “Pandora’s box,” but Hesiod describes a pithos, or large jar. “Hope” is also sometimes translated or discussed through the Greek word elpis, whose meaning can include expectation as well as hope.

Modern retellings usually present the final detail positively: although suffering entered the world, hope remained available to people.
