What stage name did Robin Scherbatsky use as a teen pop star?

The story behind the answer

Robin Scherbatsky used the stage name Robin Sparkles when she was a teenage Canadian pop star. The character’s secret musical past becomes one of How I Met Your Mother’s most memorable running jokes.

Robin’s signature song was “Let’s Go to the Mall,” a deliberately cheerful teen-pop number accompanied by a brightly colored music video. In the show’s fictional history, the song was released in 1993, when Robin was 16, and she performed it during a mall tour. Her adult friends are astonished to discover this bubbly persona because it clashes so sharply with Robin’s tough, sarcastic image as a journalist.

She later released “Sandcastles in the Sand,” a less successful follow-up. Robin also experimented with a darker musical identity called Robin Daggers, a separate stage name associated with her grunge-influenced song “P.S. I Love You.” These aliases are sometimes confused, but Robin Sparkles is the answer for her original teen-pop career.

Cobie Smulders, who played Robin, performed the songs and appeared in the fictional music videos. “Let’s Go to the Mall” first appeared in the season-two episode “Slap Bet.”
