What square in Paris marks the former site of the Bastille?

The story behind the answer

What square in Paris marks the former site of the Bastille? Place de la Bastille marks the former site of the fortress.

The square occupies the location of the Bastille prison, which was stormed on 14 July 1789 during the French Revolution and demolished between 1789 and 1790. The fortress itself no longer survives as a standing building, but its outline is marked in the pavement.

At the center stands the July Column, or Colonne de Juillet. It commemorates the July Revolution of 1830, not the original storming of the Bastille. The square also sits across Paris’s 4th, 11th, and 12th arrondissements and is now a major transport, nightlife, and demonstration site.

Another nearby reminder is the Opéra Bastille, built on the site of the former Bastille railway station. Excavations for the Métro uncovered remains of one fortress tower in 1899; those stones were reconstructed in Square Henri-Galli, a short distance away.
